Did you know that if you’re not careful, your oral health can falter during pregnancy? Well, it’s true, unfortunately. Pregnancy can affect your oral health in more ways than you might realize. This is because it can cause many dental issues, like enamel erosion, pregnancy gingivitis, and brittle teeth. So, it’s very important to take good care of your smile regularly. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. James Strang, and dental team have some tips for you.
First, give your teeth and gums the special attention they deserve. This means you need to maintain a diligent oral hygiene routine that should include brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing your smile once a day, rinsing your mouth daily, and attending your six-month checkups. As you clean your teeth and gums, use oral hygiene products that have been approved by the American Dental Association (make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste). As you visit our office for your checkup, tell our dental team you’re pregnant so we can keep your baby safe during the appointment.
Second, take extra good care of your teeth if your pregnancy makes you sick. The acid in your vomit is very harmful to the teeth, especially because it erodes the enamel. So, after you throw up, make sure to rinse your mouth with water and wait a half hour to brush.
